![]() ![]() ![]() I don’t hate prologues in general, but (view spoiler) I didn't love the prologue, unfortunately. I loved this, they’re human and relatable in their flaws. The characters are imperfect and I mean it in a good way. Doran nailed it, female characters are strong and well-rounded and Anyosa just became one of my favourite fictional ladies of all time. This author knows how to write female characters and unfortunately it’s not always granted. When the POV wasn’t hers, I waited anxiously to go back to Anyosa. ![]() ![]() She’s so sassy and sharp-tongued I honestly couldn’t wait to read her chapters. I loved both Anyosa and Sethes, but Anyosa especially won my heart. It’s my problem and not a flaw of this book. I think it could’ve been explained in more detail, but don’t mind me, I’m a lore enthusiast. I loved the worldbuilding, it reminded me of ancient Greece instead of the usual Medieval setting and it’s indeed a breath of fresh air. This book follows the story of an Empress and her General and of how they deal with a sun that’s basically exploding. ![]() ![]() His father, Henry James, Sr., was a leading theologian of the time and friends with Emerson and Thoreau his older brother, William, would become an important figure in psychology and philosophy and his sister, Alice, would later become famous as a diarist. James was born on Apin New York City into a family of wealth and intellect. In his preface to The Golden Bowl, James wrote that the writing and reading of fiction was an ethical project, that “the effort really to see and really to represent is no idle business in face of the constant force that makes for muddlement.” Moving from the Victorian melodrama of The American (1877) to the modernist impressionism of The Wings of the Dove ( 1902), James’s entire career was defined by the seriousness with which he took the art of the novel. His works explored the encounter between Americans and Europeans, between the innocent and the worldly, between individual, fluid consciousness and the obtuseness of others and the outside world. A master of focalization, he showed in works like What Maisie Knew (1897) and The Golden Bowl (1904) the centrality of perspective to a novel’s construction. ![]() ![]() Henry James was a fierce defender of the novelistic tradition and of formal complexity. ![]() ![]() The title of James Grieve’s translation, In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower, is gobbledygook. Scott Moncrieff’s title Within a Budding Grove was a most felicitous rendering of an untranslatable title. À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, the title of Proust’s second volume, for which he was awarded the prestigious Prix Goncourt, was not so fortunate. Du côté de chez Swann, traditionally translated-despite Proust’s initial objection-as Swann’s Way, appeared in England as The Way by Swann, which echoes something along the lines of “How’s by you?” “By me is fine.” It is fortunate for Lydia Davis, the translator of Volume One, that Penguin USA decided to delete all traces of The Way by Swann and restored the old way, Swann’s Way. ![]() And yet the titles of the first two volumes approach monstrosity. ![]() The six volumes of the new Viking Penguin translation of Proust received rave reviews in England. ![]() ![]() Today, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, the birthplace of many, yet a place few outsiders have ever visited. Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts. It was exquisite and heartwarming all at once. About adapting to our lives in a multi-cultural galaxy and planning for the future. Instead of detailing vast space adventures and crew dynamics, it is a book about life. ![]() Record of a Spaceborn Few is unlike anything I could have expected and I loved it. ![]() ![]() ![]() I cannot tell you how much my heart broke for Celie and the horrors she went through, but my heart also sang when I saw her finally finding herself. There are so many little side plots that I loved like Mary Agnes pursuing her dream to sing. The characters are beautifully written and I could almost hear them talking to me directly I could see every scene right in front of me, and grew so invested in each and every character. It was raw, honest, and absolutely hard-to-read at times but I adored every page because it is a beautiful story of one woman's self-discovery that she is important and that she matters. Her two children are taken from her, and she is forced into an ugly marriage. BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Set in the harsh, segregated world of the Deep South between the wars, Celie has been raped by the man she calls father. ![]() ![]() ![]() Quote: "I want THEM watched al all times." thatvis rediculous! The true horror of this audio incarnation of a cyberpunk classic is the narrator. Still,at chapter 7 or so the story picks up momentum and I got sucked in anyway. Not much of the compact, action packed, to the point writing his later work is full of. A lot of boring inbetween stuff and filler material that feels like it could just as well have been left out of the book. ![]() I can tell this is one of Asher's earlier attempts at writing a novel.
